Fundamentals of Biostatistics and Advanced Data Analysis

The Fundamentals of Biostatistics and Advanced Data Analysis Programme is being offered as a collaborative effort between the Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) and the Centre for Clinical Psychology, University of the Punjab, Lahore.

Course Overview

This intensive programme has a duration of 3 months, with classes scheduled twice a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The course starts on 3rd July 2024, with registration beginning on 22nd June 2024. The monthly fee is Rs. 10,000/- (only). Limited seats are available, and participants can take advantage of a 20% Early Bird Discount until 15th June 2024 or for groups of 5 or more members.

Key Learning Outcomes and Objectives

The course objectives are to introduce fundamental statistical concepts (probability, hypotheses, sampling techniques, and data distributions), familiarize students with common statistical software packages like MS Excel, SPSS, and AMOS, and introduce methods of making differences and drawing conclusions about populations based on sample data (including confidence intervals and hypothesis testing). Additionally, the course will cover analysing relationships between variables, assessing total, direct, and indirect effects by performing Mediation and Moderation Analysis, and mastering Tool construction using EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) and CFA (Confirmatory Factor Analysis), and an introduction to Regression.

Upon completion, students will grasp the principles of data analysis, interpretation, and inference in biological and health-related research, and will gain a strong understanding of clinical research, determining sample sizes, conducting power analysis, and analysing clinical trial data. By the end of the course, participants should be proficient in EFA or CFA, enabling them to apply these techniques to interpret underlying constructs of their measurement instruments.

Facilitators and Coordination

The programme features a team of experienced facilitators, including: Dr. Steven Lane (Medical Statistician, University of Liverpool, UK), Dr. Paul Bassett (Medical Statistician, Statsconsultancy Ltd), Prof. Dr. Saima Dawood (Director, Centre for Clinical Psychology, University of the Punjab), and Prof. Dr. Zainab Zadeh (Head of Division Child Health and Psychiatry, PILL). They are supported by a skilled team from PILL: Mr. Sami ul Haq Ansari, Mr. Suleman Shakooor, Dr. Mohsin Alvi, and Ms. Azka Idrees. The course is coordinated by Ms. Amna Noureen, Clinical Psychologist and Global Lead for Teaching, PILL.

Registration and Eligibility

Students, professionals, researchers, psychologists, social workers, and teachers are encouraged to attend. Participants should ensure they have MS Excel, SPSS, and AMOS software installed before the course begins. A key requirement for certification is the End of the course assessment and 80% attendance.
